Choosing a Web Design Company - Can You Compare Apples to Apples?
When it comes to hiring a web design company, a lot of local business owners make the mistake of trying to compare apples to apples - usually related to shopping for the best price. Selecting a website design company is a lot like hiring a sales rep; afterall, your website really is like a virtual sales rep for your business.
The website shopping scenario typically goes something like this... small business owners gets a proposal from company A. Company A lists out all the cool features and "deliverables" available for $XXXX price. Company A sends the proposal to the business owner, who feels obligated to get a second opinion. He/She sends Company A's proposal to Company B, who typically creates a new proposal that includes everything in Company A's proposal plus a few additional items. The business owner then either goes with this company OR calls Company A back and says, "Company B is offering everything you are PLUS they're giving me Widget X, Y and Z - all for a price that's $XXX lower than your package.
Some of you in the remodeling or home improvement industry might already recognize how ridiculous this scenario is, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen every single day! Unfortunately, it's virtually impossible to compare apples to apples when it comes to website design (and online marketing in general for that matter). If you're smart, you shouldn't even try. Instead, look for the company that seems to have the best process, expertise and understanding of your short-term/long-term objectives. If a company throws out a price before they ask you about your goals, RUN don't walk to the nearest exit!
Again, think about hiring a web design firm like you would hiring a sales rep. Is a $30K per year sales rep "cheaper" or a "better deal" than a $60K per year sales rep? It depends, right? If the $60K sales rep sells in a month what the $30K rep sells in a year, you know which rep is the better deal. They might look the same on paper, but perform very differently once "on the field."
